Local news video (embedded below) showing vendors and rib chefs vying for the big prize for best rib cook (see the list of all chef vendors) at the Nugget Rib Cook-Off festival, which will be announced at 2:00 p.m. Labor Day Monday (tomorrow). See the event’s Facebook for fun visitor commentary and photos: Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off.

Yes, Succulent Whole Smoked Pigs Are There

The Nugget Rib Cook-Off is indeed a fun event — for foodies who love barbequed ribs. But you also get live free music and the fun of wandering around exploring row after row of the trinket vendors there. As I said, it feels like going to the state fair and this year the Cook-Off has had record numbers of visitors — in the hundreds of thousands (see visitor comments on Yelp!) — all coming to EAT RIBS (see Flickr photos). Rib chefs (Bone Daddys our favorite) are busy smoking and barbecuing their style of ribs (dry rub or dripping wet) day and night for people willing to stand in line to get them for 1/2 hour or more!

PRICES: A typical rib meal is kinda expensive, so you’ll need to take plenty of CASH along. A meal for one costs $13-14 for THREE ribs, along with 1/4 cup of tasteless coleslaw and 1/4 cup of beans, along with a dinner bun. Dinner for two costs around $28, which includes a side of ribs divided in half for two, served with coleslaw (or potato salad depending on which vendor you choose), BBQ beans and a dinner roll. OR you can just buy a side of ribs for $24 or so. PRICES VARY depending on vendor, of course. To buy a WHOLE SMOKED PIG (with head on), the cost is $150.00, I was told. Fresh pressed lemonade (the absolute best) is available everywhere — a large cup size is $5.00 and a cup of beer is also $5.00. Other food is on hand; roast corn on the cob, candied apples, chili, and much more — food just like you’d get at a state fair.

Aerial photo of this year’s Burning Man in the Black Rock desert.
CLICK TO ENLARGE FOR BIG PICTURE

Meanwhile, out in Black Rock Desert, the annual Burning Man Festival is going on, with some 61,000 people attending this year (last year’s attendance was 56,000). The cost to live there for a week is $300 per person. Motor home rentals average $1,200. Gas for motor home to and from (if motor home rented in nearby Reno) averages $500. Cost to clean motor home rental (from desert dirt): $1,200. And then there are food and water costs, along with spending money needed to pay for event fees within Burning Man. So let us estimate the cost to attend will be over $3 grand, give or take.

“Do not defecate on the playa! Not only is it illegal, but it also creates an unpleasant mess for everyone, especially those who restore the playa after the event.” BurningMan.com

Also, there is now sewer in the desert, so imagine all the HUMAN WASTE accumulating in all the Porta Potties provided for the people out there. In addition, there are NO SHOWER FACILITIES, so you might imagine the funk of humans after a week without a shower, with blowing desert dirt on them and the smell of campfire on their bodies from the smoke fallout from the massive Rim Fire in Yosemite blowing northward directly on Burning Man, along with the natural CHEESE BUM SCENT that humans develop in 2-3 days without washing — especially around the genital area — which, of course, we here at Cringe Fringe are always concerned about, HEH-HEH.

“We don’t know the exact cause,” said Todd McNeal, fire chief in Twain Harte, a town that has been in the path of the flames.
Firemen say the terrible Rim Fire won’t be out until September 20th, by the way, a long time to live with toxic air, thanks to pot growers raking in millions while people suffer and events get canceled due to the fire smoke fallout causing the most polluted air in the country. And I’ve had a sinus infection for a week from breathing this stench, and it’s just now healing only because I’ve been staying indoors like a hermit and wearing a creepy mask around town causing people to laugh and stare at me while they breathe toxic smoke air equivalent to smoking 3 packs of cigarettes! SEE AIRNow.gov for air quality advisory notices in your area (enter your zip code at top of page). Saturday’s air quality for Reno/Sparks, Nevada area is surprisingly only “moderate” today at 64, as opposed to the “very unhealthy” rating for the last few days, when it rose to 209 and above (toxic).

Hang the son-of-a-bitches in public square for causing this torture!

SMOKY LAKE TAHOE

And to be out in it for any length of time leaves a body’s skin and clothe smelling like campfire (imagine what the Burners at Burning Man (pictured at right) must smell like — as they’re getting hit by the smoke, too).

I wear the dust face mask pictured below outside, or a bandana over my nose and mouth (but not in the bank). Also, with or without the face mask, the inside of my nose gets thick with sticky gunk from the fallout, clogging it up. It’s very stubborn to get out being so sticky — blowing the nose just doesn’t cut it. I have to get under the shower head and actually spray warm water up my nose to clean the sinus passage. I also use Saline Spray to clean it out, along with Afrin and Neo Synephrine — which unclog the nose FAST, but cost $8 clams and the bottles contain very little. I also have had several sinus-related headaches likely caused by the filthy smoke fallout in the air.

The eyes are also affected by the smoke matter, causing them to become dry and itchy, with red lining. Eye drops are a must — but don’t last long. Only relief is by patting the eyes with a warm, clean face cloth. Not only that, but your lips and throat get dry and you can taste the smoke on your lips or when you cough up phlegm caused by the dripping sinus the body creates to clean the sinus system.

The Rim Fire has turned beautiful blue Lake Tahoe gray with smoke fallout. Local news media tells everyone to stay indoors with the air conditioner on to avoid smoke inhalation. No one has tested the public water supply for smoke matter polluting it, such as the Hetch Hetchy reservoir near the Rim Fire that serves the San Francisco Bay Area, but it’s likely to contain the fine particulate matter floating over it.

Here’s what the City of Reno looks like most days. The atmosphere is a weird Sepia color. The highrises of downtown Reno are center.

This is the temperature of Reno, Nevada at 5:15 p.m. today from my thermometer on my porch. It’s actually in the shade, so imagine what the temp is in the broad daylight. It feels like a furnace outside. But indoors, in my shady apartment with the air-conditioner on, it’s pleasant. I don’t run the thing often — because of the high power bill it generates and the strain on the city’s power grid in general. I only run it during extreme triple-digit heatwaves like this for health reasons outlined below.

Tomorrow the whole country’s in the red, including Europe’s scorching heatwave. It’s hot EVERYWHERE.

Normally I could stand the high heat, but I’m diabetic. Diabetics are more susceptible to heat sensitivity; their ability for sweating is impaired due to the damage on the nervous system caused by the disease. Sweating is the body’s way of regulating heat, but many diabetics can’t sweat like normal people do. I get nauseous, dizzy and weak feeling when I’m in extreme heat. So heat and diabetics don’t agree. Diabetics, whether Type 1 or Type 2 need to keep out of it and hydrated. The bodies of diabetics do not regulate heat like normal people and prolonged exposure can get dangerous, with possible diabetic coma sun stroke. See article, “Summer Heat and Type 2 Diabetes.”

“People with diabetes have a nervous system that often malfunctions and causes an impaired sweating ability. That causes them to not be able to sweat and respond to the heat like someone who doesn’t have diabetes. Anything above 86 degrees could damage them.”

So it’s really important to seek shade if you’re a diabetic. Don’t fuck around and ignore my advice here if you’re a diabetic. Take your insulin or meds, drink lots of water (not Cola, drink plain WATER) and stay indoors or in the shade during a heatwave.

You could drink something to replace lost electrolytes from dehydration that often occurs in diabetics, such as a sports drink — however, NOTE THIS: many sports drinks contain too much sugar and salt. The best drink is Pedialyte for adults, but there are dangers to drinking too much Pedialyte. Adults should generally take 100 mL to 150 mL per kilogram of body weight (45 mL to 70 mL per pound) each day.

All across the country, FOOD is either being cooked or planned to be cooked! This morning the scent of bacon … in the skillet and the heavenly aroma of fresh coffee lingers in households as people have their holiday breakfast on their day off from work… smokers are busy slow-roasting BBQ spareribs, poultry and beef for the annual 4th of July feast. Potato and macaroni salad will be made to go along with the animal flesh, along with delicious corn-on-the-cob and baked beans bubbling away in dutch ovens. Camp grounds are full, with the smell of camp fires, tents are up, fishing poles are being readied. There will be festivals and parades everywhere, with live bands to provide the musical merriment. Street vendors are busy setting up their stands offering trinkets, along with more holiday food such as Buffalo Chicken Wings, a holiday staple. Giddy excitement abounds as little kids watch the annual parade, inciting gasps of wonder as independence day floats pass them by. And the anticipation of today’s grand finale: THE FIREWORKS!

It’s a day of joy and merriment, of celebration of the brave men and women who gave their lives in battles long ago to preserve the peace and goodwill of America. We not only remember the heroes of war, but also our country’s founders — those dim images of long ago — who wrote the Declaration of Independence from the tyranny of English rule, the men who wrote the country’s Constitution and Bill of Rights, who perceived a wonderful land offering peace, freedom and the right to pursue their dreams. All made possible in “the land of the free.”

So enjoy your holiday oh faithful followers of the Web’s weird and strange news. For one day, cast away your fear and paranoia, your suspicions of the big bad government, your fears of violent and weird people running loose wreaking havoc, your concerns about the degradation of morality and the violations of the sanctity of law, your worries about UFOs, aliens and ghosts… of strange manmade diseases, of polluted food crops… CAST AWAY THE FEAR! It is a day to R-E-L-A-X.

IGNORE THOSE SELLING FEAR FOR PROFIT ON THE WEB

Now go forth! Go forth out your door into the light of the real world! Begone from this electronic world of mystery that is… the Internet! Go unto the realm of reality to see what you can see on this special day for your country!
